During Term 2 the Years 5 and 6 students have researched the history of Italian migration to Australia. The focus has been on the contribution made by Italian migrants to Australia and the Australian way of life. The students discussed factors which led people to migrate, possible hardships faced by the early migrants and some of their achievements.
The children then worked groups to research a famous Australian of Italian heritage of their choice. They considered the person’s achievements as well as their contribution to Australia. They presented their findings to the class as an oral report.
As part of our Inquiry unit this term, the senior level students attended the Immigration Museum in Melbourne on Wednesday 10th June. They were given the opportunities to explore and experience the different immigration patterns to Australia as well as sharing stories of individual immigrants.
As a follow up, the students have been working towards sharing an immigration story that is reflected in a suitcase of personal belongings. Some students have chosen to focus on family members. These will be displayed in the Senior classrooms on Wednesday 24 th June. Please feel free to have a wander through the rooms during Parent teacher interviews.
Last week the Year 5/6 students participated in the Jump Rope For Heart ‘Jump Off Day’. Students skipped their way through the Physical Education Lesson demonstrating the skills of ball skipping with a partner, double dutch and long rope skipping. They enjoyed trying new challenges such as double under, wrap around and the pretzel. The students are taking the skills they have learnt to the next level by inventing their own tricks.
Last Wednesday the Year 5 students presented a Spirit Filled Expo to the school community. The students were able to research their chosen person and relate important details about this spirit filled person. This included identifying the Gifts and Fruits that these significant people have shown in their lives. The students enjoyed the Expo and put a lot of effort into their costumes and presentations. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support the students.
